Why was the Weeble developed?

Debi Steven, founder of Premier Self-Defence Ltd, has been involved in martial arts and self-defence for over a decade. She is passionate about people’s personal safety and angered about the injustice of any kind of attack or intimidation whether that be on an adult or a child. Debi and her team believed that there was a need to create a practical and useful safety aid that had many functions. One of their motivating factors has been the alarming increase in the UK in violent crime in general and specifically crimes against women & young adults. Particularly worrying is the increase in drug-assisted rapes across Britain, which affects women, men and youngsters. Over 69 different drugs can be used in drug-assisted rapes. These types of attacks are being suffered not only by women but also men and adolescents. “We also realised that the general public has very low awareness of the effects of drugs being placed in one’s drink, what symptoms to look out for and the urgent steps to take to secure your personal safety once you suspect your drink has been drugged and how to preserve evidence of this fact. With this in mind ideas started to develop and came together in what we now have today as the Weeble. This multifunctional personal safety aid is a personal safety aid for all ages allowing us all to be more prepared.” – Debi Steven

What exactly is the Weeble?

The Weeble is a unique multifunctional personal safety aid. The design has been successfully registered and the concept has been lodged with the Patent Office and is pending patent.

The primary function of the Weeble is that it is carried to perform the following personal safety functions:

Primary functions of the Weeble:

1. Liquid Sample holder: Drug-rape drugs metabolise quickly and therefore the potential evidence leaves one’s system rapidly and thus is difficult to detect. (As to how fast this will happen will depend on the victim’s metabolic rate, body weight, the quantity and the type of drug used. However, in some cases this can be just a matter of hours). It is therefore extremely important for the victim to take a urine sample as quickly as possible and as a result this might need to be done in a bar or a club. The Weeble provides an excellent and practical container for such a sample as it is perfectly designed to hold 14 ml of liquid for analysis.

2. Attached to the Weeble is a card with important advice on reducing the risks, the symptoms to expect and the steps to follow if your drink has been drugged.

Steps to reduce risks:

• Never leave your drinks unattended (whether at a private house party or a bar or club)
• Only accept drinks from someone you trust

Symptoms: dizziness, nausea, confusion, clammy hands & blurred vision

Steps to take if you suspect your drink has been spiked:

• Seek help immediately from a person you trust or bar/club management
• Get to a place of safety with someone you trust
• Take a urine sample & place in your Weeble & take to the police or GP for analysis
• Report incident to the police without delay

3. Emergency Contact number holder: On the easily removable card contained in the shaft of the Weeble there is space for five emergency/useful contact numbers to be written:

• Emergency mobile number
• Emergency landline number (in the event the mobile is switched off)

The above two are very important from a personal safety point of view as it is shocking how many people today no longer memorise telephone numbers as they are now stored in their mobile phone memory. In a survey done across the hundreds of students i.e. adults and youngsters who have attended our courses less that 20% of those individuals could repeat, from memory, emergency mobile numbers and emergency landline contact numbers! Individuals may find themselves in a situation where their mobile phone has been left at home, has been stolen, the battery is flat, there is a technical malfunction or there is no signal. In such circumstances the contact numbers contained in the Weeble could be vital.

• A local registered mini cab company number

There is a worrying increase in the number of rapes and assaults perpetrated by illegal mini cab drivers in big towns and cities across the UK. In London alone last year there were over 240 reported sexual assaults by illegal mini cab drivers. The actual figure being significantly higher given only around 10% of rapes tend to be reported. It is therefore very important that individuals have readily at hand a safe, a registered mini cab firm’s number. This number is often not memorised and is essential especially at night when trying to get home. Also, from a parent’s point of view it is important that their children have this number accessible in the event that a parent cannot collect their child for whatever reason e.g. traffic jam, car failure etc.

4. Emergency £5, £10, £20 holder: The Weeble shaft can also contain an emergency £5, £10 or £20 note, which could be very useful if the holder has run out of money, the ATM does not work or they have lost their wallet or their ATM card does not work. This money could help them get home safely in a cab.

5. Easily accessible in bag: The design of the Weeble also makes it easy to find one’s keys in the bottom of a handbag, sports bag or school bag.

2. Lastly the Weeble is a useful personal safety aid if the holder, at a given moment feels, that their physical personal safety is at risk and they choose to use the Weeble in self-defence. There are number of self-defence moves that can be performed with the Weeble. A booklet is currently being developed to advise people on how best to use the Weeble in a genuine self-defence situation. The Weeble is easy to use not only for adults but for youngsters too.

What does the Weeble look like?

The Weeble looks similar to a small Maglight torch. It is light and made from hardened polypropylene plastic which has a decorative metallic sparkle and is currently available in 3 colours: blue, dark purple & pink. The Weeble is just over 12 cm in length and 1.5 cm diameter at the base. The shaft of the Weeble is hollow, holding 14 ml liquid volume. This widened end of the Weeble is funnelled to make it easier to place liquid into the shaft as well as helps to secure the Weeble in your hand by preventing it from slipping out. A flat screw top lid, that can be easily opened, as well as secured tightly by using a coin, secures the opening.

The other end of the shaft has a key ring clip, which transforms the Weeble into a perfect attachment for keys.

Future developments with the Weeble:

Premier Self-Defence is currently planning a training booklet that will serve to remind instructors of the physical self-defence functions of the Weeble. This booklet, once released, can also be sold to your students along with the Weeble. Later on we will be producing an instruction video. These two projects are expected to come to fruition in early and mid 2004.
